My client separated from his spouse in the year. Why doesn't DT Max give him the federal deduction for alimony paid?

For federal purposes, you may claim the deduction for alimony paid or the spousal amount, but not both. The same applies for the eligible dependant. DT Max claims the deduction that is the most advantageous for the taxpayer.
